Established in 1977, Barnstormer Chinos set out to produce authentic Japanese-made, American-style dress chinos. They are crafted using vintage American sewing machines in Japan, techniques that modern machinery cannot replicate. The company was founded by Ebine Monroe, an expert in the history of American chino-making. Monroe, who took over the company from his father, transformed it into a global sensation.
What makes Barnstormer different?Barnstormer develops everything from scratch to meet its exacting standards. All trousers are produced in specialist factories dedicated to crafting high-quality, tailored garments. Above is an example of the details that go into each pair. Ebine explains that, at first glance, the chinos appear simple, however much of the beauty lies in the cut and curve, which makes all the difference.
The most iconic style in their lineup since the early days has been the two-pleat chinos. What sets these trousers apart is their inward pleats (inner tucks), a feature rarely seen in cotton trousers. This design traces its origins to British tailoring methods. Creating inward pleats requires additional steps, such as pressing the pleats before tailoring, adding to their unique craftsmanship.
Ebine Monroe explains “The key emphasis of the brand is ‘not to look too dressy on the surface.’ Our philosophy is to apply dressmaking techniques to dress pants while maintaining the appearance of regular cotton chinos. At first glance, they should look like ordinary chinos, but with an excellent silhouette. This balance is our most significant focus.”
Barnstormer chinos are the perfect everyday trousers, effortlessly versatile for dressing up or down. Once you try them, you won’t look back—they offer everything you could want and more from a hardworking pair of chinos.
